Virtual Insanity – a night cheering for the wrong team

5 Mar

Last night saw one of football’s most bizarre phenomena played out as Brentford fans saw themselves in the unlikely position of cheering on both Leeds United and Wigan Athletic. Neither club is probably high up the Christmas Card list with Leeds supporters being chief instigators of the ‘tinpot’ jibes. Wigan, meanwhile, have plundered both Uwe and Adam Forshaw from Griffin Park in recent seasons (how is that working out for you, Dave?  Dave? Dave…..).

To read the rest of this article, season 2014/15 is now available to download onto Kindle (and other electronic reading device) in full. Containing additional material and even some (poor) editing, you can get it here for less than the cost of a Griffin Park matchday programme or Balti Pie.

Thanks for reading and all your comments over the course of the season. For now, I need to make more space on the site for any follow up. However, ‘close season’ will continue in full, further on.

Keep on calling us tinpot, chaps. We're anything but

Im glad we could help u out,but ive a feeling we will be playing you tinpots next season.

I think a lot of people would agree with you (apart from the tinpot bit – although i love all that gumph). Put a run together and Leeds United could still make the play offs for the Premiership

As this is on Leeds United News Now, you’ll get far more hits on your weblog than usual. Another reason to love the Mighty Whites! Cheers!

Mighty White? I’m more a Hovis Granary man 🙂 Cracking result last night, though. Nice one

      • Deeda LUFC March 5, 2015 at 10:07 pm #

Hovis Granary? Well I suppose you won’t be a Warburton man for much longer?

      • nickbruzon March 5, 2015 at 11:08 pm #

Sounds like his career at Griffin Park is almost certainly ‘brown bread’. Who’d have thought it after such and odds defying season?

That album is timeless! Go and wash your mouth/fingers out! 🙂

Forget football. Regardless of club, this is one point we are probably all agreed on !!

Forshaw did nothing for Wigan, couldn’t get in the team. He’s at Middlesbrough. Obviously he didn’t wanna go back to Brentford. Just sayin.

    • nickbruzon March 5, 2015 at 11:16 pm #

To be fair, we wouldn’t have had him back, now. Our midfield has been booming despite his departure.

Honestly wouldn’t have thought I’d be saying that at the start of the season and, to be fair, I was desperate for him to stay.

Was gutted he left but the replacements have been immense.

Well written piece, all fans at some point have had an evening like yours. Good luck for the rest of the season and on a personal note never call a club tinpot with the exception of a one club somewhere west of Oldham. Actually had the pleasure of sharing a tube train with some of your casuals a few years ago. Decent bunch to be fair and had a good bit of banter with them although as we are now (for the moment anyway) in the same division it might be different next time MOT

Cheers. The whole season has been one of genuine surprise, excitement and nothing but good fun. Can assure you that any ‘tinpot’ comments have been treated with nothing but good humour and, indeed, would agree that the vast majority of fans from all clubs treat them with the same regard.
Here’s to more years like the one, although it’ll be a tough act to follow.
Many thanks indeed for taking the time to read and post a comment.

Oh and tops marks by the way for referring to us as ‘United’ in the correct manner. You’ll win a lot of favour amongst the LUFC family for that. As we are one of the genuine Uniteds unlike the imposters from Salford whom the sycophantic media would have us all believe are the one and only, when not only isn’t the city united they’re not even the best team in their city.

Was nice to see you hammer the dog botherers on tuesday also… But as mentioned, am pretty sure that your tinpot lot will be in the championship next season and think we will be up there before your lot get a sniff! Also doubt very much that we will make the play offs this season.. Onwards and upwards! M.O.T

Very much appreciated. The entire season has been a combination of punching above our (anticipated) weight and just general FUN. Who would have predicted it??
I’m just enjoying the ride whilst it lasts.

Many thanks indeed for your comments. Massively appreciated (especially for something I love doing )

Might see you on the Ealing Road Terrace for Forest if I can get a ticket You Bees….

      • nickbruzon March 6, 2015 at 6:14 am #

You’ll have no issue getting a ticket. Contact the club and tell them you are flying in for it. I’m sure they’ll help before it sells out

This is the tightest I remember seeing the championship with all the promotion and play off places up for grabs. Good luck Brentford, although I think that we will be seeing you again next year… Don’t forget to bring your tinpot with your moneyball in it. I remember, football used to have a soul

  10. Simon Johnson March 5, 2015 at 1:29 pm #

There’s the funny thing. Apart from people trying to get a rise out of you for a laugh (very easily) no Leeds fan particularly think of you as ‘tinpot’. Christ – we know everyone has to hate us (it’s the law, after all), but there’s no need to make up crap like that to badly justify a theme in a blog piece.

  11. Wigan_Bob March 5, 2015 at 1:31 pm #

It’s weird the differences of opinion Wigan get from Bees fans, although a lot have let it lie, there are still some out there that hate us for the Uwe/Forshaw “saga” (I can see your article is quite tongue in cheek though), which at times I feel pretty gutted about, as I really want you to do well.

One thing I would say though as a fan of a team t’sovis crù o t’wrong side o t’hills would also class as tinpot, if you do make the greed is good league and especially if stay there for any length of time, get ready for this sort of thing to become common place on a much bigger scale. As the big and not so big boys come knocking, nay demanding your best players/managers/groundsmen/fans/tea ladies etc.

Other than that, hope you get those remaining wins needed under your belt and look forward to seeing you, in one of the four corners for your promotion party, after the match in May 🙂

  12. SouthStand LUFC March 5, 2015 at 1:32 pm #

    All Leeds aren’t we?

  13. andre March 5, 2015 at 1:41 pm #

Win on Saturday excellent, draw (remember those? for those with short memories, that’s when both teams score the same number of goals, although you can be forgiven for not remembering them) not too bad, and defeat not terminal. Whatever happens, there’ll still be 30 points to pick up (or drop) for both teams.

This season’s going down to the wire, and if Wigan are on a mini-revival, it could mean they may even have something to play for in the last game rather than being already down. In any case, there’ll continue to be some mad results between now and May.

But… who’d have thought at the start of the season Bees would still be in the mix for the play-offs, let alone auto promotion, come March?

  14. Deeda LUFC March 5, 2015 at 10:08 pm #

As a Leeds fan I have no gripe with the Bees and to be honest out of the current top seven teams I’d like to see you go up more than the others. Nice to see Johnny Douglas getting the success he deserves. As for us I think it’s a season or maybe two away as the soap opera at Elland Road rolls on. But you can be assured that we will get there sooner rather than later. For a club that plays in all white ironically we’re far too colourful to stay down for too long.

Cheers. Dougie most definitely enjoying an Indian summer (amongst other things…) .
Its been a cracking season so far with a lot of great banter. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment
