Could things get any more surreal this weekend? I’m still struggling to reconcile Brentford sticking four past Wolves to go third in the Championship table. Third In the Championship. Apologies, but it bears repeating. Then Birmingham City just had to go and take things to an even stranger place.

Attack of the Killer Bees. Even Leroy is buzzing after 4-0 win

Possibly the craziest November on record ended up with Brentford making it five Championship wins on the bounce, the latest being Saturday’s 4-0 thumping of Wolves. With The Bees now up to third in the table (only a point off the top) and Warbs, surely, a shoe-in for Manager of the Month, the whole thing is just taking a turn for the surreal.

Frankly, I’ve run out of superlatives to describe the spirit and endeavor of this team.

Is one player a secret Eurovision fan?

I make no apologies for being late to this party but, if you haven’t heard, today’s Brentford – Wolves game marks a very special occasion. Assuming Kenny Jackett picks him (and how would that be for putting a dampener on things) Wolves Bakary Sako will make his 100^th appearance for the club when they face the Bees in our Championship clash.

And what a way to recognise this landmark. The midfielder has commissioned a pair of custom made golden boots, bedecked in the club colours and covered in Swarovski crystals, to celebrate this centenary.

There’s nothing like a bit of competition to bring out the best

I love Friday mornings for the simple reason that no more ‘work day wake ups’ remain before Saturday’s Championship football. And with Wolves the next team to line up against Brentford, this Friday seems even more special than others.

Wolves may have a title but King Kev wears the crown

In the end Wolves swept aside Leyton Orient and with Brentford not quite able to hold onto the lead at MK Dons (Izale McLeod must have really wanted that half price pizza) the title has gone to Molineux. And so before this column goes any further, I must start by offering my congratulations to Kenny Jackett, his team and their supporters.

The table doesn’t lie and having 99 points with two games left shows they are worthy champions. This aside, I’d love to think that Brentford have more than given them an unforeseen run for their money and kept the pressure on all the way.

Our own total of 91 is already a club record, with the chance available to push this to 97. Just to put this into real perspective, last season’s eventual winners Doncaster Rovers did it with a ‘mere’ 84.

Turn it up to 11 and let’s see what happens….

There’ll be more than a few eyes (or ears, as many Brentford fans will be in transit to MK Dons) on the lunchtime kick off between Leyton Orient and Wolves today.

Whilst I’m not sure if it is still politically correct to talk about the ‘fat lady’, I can’t hear any females, corpulent or otherwise, singing just yet. Saint and Greavsie may be firing up a trophy-laden helicopter as we speak and pointing it towards Wolverhampton, but in my eyes the title race is still open.

Liverpool good. Peterborough better. Brentford best

Calmed down yet? Me neither. I still can’t believe that Brentford have done it after all the years of coming SO close.

Second to Birmingham City when only one team went up. Double play-off heartbreak under Martin Allen. Any play off, for that matter. Even last season when Keith Stroud nobbling Tony Craig cost us three points at an excellent Sheffield United side. Oh, and then the small matter of ‘the other thing’ against Doncaster Rovers.

As somebody who has been coming to Griffin Park since the end of the 70s, I’m probably as experienced as anyone to appreciate those rare moments of joy. That’s close to 35 years where the ecstasy has been outweighed by, if not the heartbreak, then certainly an awfully large portion of mediocrity.

Could a returning hero seal it today?

Brentford take on Preston North End on Friday, knowing that a win (combined with defeats for Rotherham United at Wolves and Leyton Orient at Crawley) will be enough to see promotion from League One confirmed.

It is a big ask, and moreso because I can’t see any slip ups coming from the O’s or Rotherham. Both those play off teams are still in with a theoretical chance of ‘automatic’ themselves and so will be desperately fighting, like hungry dogs over an empty bucket of KFC, for every point possible.

But whatever they do is irrelevant (our title aspirations aside, of course) as long as Brentford win.

“As long as Brentford win”. It sounds so simple on paper and, in theory it should it be.

Well done Wolves, push up Brentford and a soaking for Woking.

We need to start today by saying congratulations to Wolves. Whilst Brentford failed to pick up one of the two victories needed to secure promotion, our title rivals had no such problem in getting the three points they required.

Despite a mid season wobble that let Brentford back into the race, Wolves have been an excellent side and so deserve to end the campaign by going up rather than down (as has been the case for the previous two).
